One year ago, on 15 November 2022, I quit Amazon to go full time in my business.
$400k+ in revenue and 93 clients later, here are 5 business lessons I have learned that will help you 10X your career growth.
In the early days of full-time entrepreneurship, I had to fight imposter syndrome and believe that I was a good coach way before I saw a single results. The more I worked on this self-belief, the faster I saw client results, and the faster my business grew.
Your career is the same way. You got to believe that you will be an excellent leader way before any company hires you. If you need help believing that, go to lesson #2.
Before I quit Amazon, I hired a first 1:1 coach. Her only job was to remind me that I am an expert in my field and that I could do anything I set my mind to. This weekly repeat reminder was sometimes the only thing I needed to break past my limiting thoughts and create extraordinary results in my business.
If you have big dreams for your career, you need to get yourself a coach. A good coach helps you see your blind spots, reminds you of your purpose and has your back so you can take on the world.
Entrepreneurial burnout is real. As a new entrepreneur, not only did I worry about where the next sale will come from, I also overtly people-pleased, over extending my time to clients, adjusting calls to others’ schedules and saying yes to opportunities without any compensation. It’s only when I found myself burning out, did I take back control of my calendar, and saw both my sanity and my business grow. Since then, there has only been one instance when I lost a sale because my schedule didn’t work for the client.
For others to respect our boundaries, we have to respect them first. Prioritize yourself on your calendar first. You’ll be surprised, how much others are willing to accommodate you.
Doubling my income, while scaling back my working hours (I work 35 hours/week now and aiming for 25 hour work weeks in 2024) has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of starting my business. Not only does more money help me secure my family’s future, it allows me to create a more impact driven life through the endeavours I have planned for next year to serve young girls and underserved women.
Nothing bad happens when women make more money. If you did not negotiate your last offer, feel underpaid in your current job, or want to create a path to generational wealth, it’s time for us to talk.
If I can put a pin in one skill that helped me grow my business, it is fearless self-promotion. This one skill helped me convert my Amazon interview into a multi-six-figure offer, one endorsement into the biggest Women’s Leadership Program run across the Government of Canada, and one client result into a fully-booked client roster.
Do excellent work. Convert that work into quantitative results. Share it with anyone who would listen. Don’t worry about what your peers will think. And see the magic happen.
