3 Myths Stopping You From Getting Your Dream Job In Tech

In November 2022, I made the jump from the Oil & Gas Industry to the Tech industry, landing a Senior Program Manager position with Amazon’s global Recruiting Operations organization. With this switch, not only did I completely changed industries and functions, but I also increased my total compensation by 45%.

When I reflected on what contributed to my successful transition to the Tech industry, it boiled down to one simple thing: I had overcome the limiting beliefs that hold so many of us back from stepping outside our comfort zone.

I later helped many of my friends and clients overcome similar limiting beliefs and land 200k+ jobs in big Tech like Amazon, Google, and GoDaddy.
So in my first newsletter of 2023, I want to bust 3 myths that are holding you back from making a transition to the Tech industry and building the career of your dreams.

3 Myths that are holding you back from making a transition to the Tech industry:

1. You need a degree in Computer Science

43% of all jobs in Tech are for non-tech roles, positions such as Program Manager, Product Manager, Customer Service, and Account Executive.

The Tech industry doesn’t discriminate based on education, number of years of experience, location, or gender. If you can show you have the skills, you can get a job in Tech.

2. You need to have prior Tech experience

Unlike Consulting, Investment Banking or VC, not having prior Tech experience doesn’t mean you need to start from scratch. You also don’t need expensive degrees like an MBA or fancy certificates like PMP or CSM (of course, having one that never hurts). That makes Tech one of the most enticing industries for experienced professionals ready for a career transition.

Understand how the roles and compensation levels work in Tech, use project-based experience to show you have the skills, and get ready to make the jump.

3. No one is hiring in Tech anymore

Everyone is talking about the 91,000 jobs lost in Tech, but no one is talking about the 310,000 jobs that are open in the US IT industry alone.

Type “I am hiring” in the LinkedIn search bar, filter by “People,” and ring up every hiring manager and recruiter to find your next opportunity in Tech.

Most people will believe one of these three myths and take themselves out of the game. I don’t want you to be one of them.
