How My Client Landed Her Dream Job at HP After a 3-Year Career Break

My client just celebrated an offer with HP after a 3-year career break.

When R decided to leave her high-paying job at Deloitte to care for her young kid, she thought she was making the right decision for her family.

Having worked at two of the biggest consulting firms in the world, she thought she had proved herself enough to quickly land a job again when she returned from her hiatus.

But after she was told twice during interviews, “We do not hire candidates with a career break”, what was supposed to be the most precious time of her life started feeling like her biggest career regret.

At Pinkcareers, we like to say, “No one should ever have to regret their decision to take time off to care for their loved ones”.

So we got to work.

Here are the exact steps R followed to land her dream offer exactly 60 days after joining THE FEARLESS HIRE.

1. Mindset change

After repeatedly being told that “we don’t hire candidates on a career break”, R was starting to believe that maybe her decision to take time off was a mistake.

This translated into her dreading questions about her career gap and confidently addressing them.

As a first step, she worked on reaffirming her belief that a career break does not make her a less desirable candidate and that she will find the right company that values family and flexibility.

2. Repositioned her Resume to show upskilling

In the 3 years that R took off to care for her young son, she finished two Masters, and a PMP certificate. But her Resume and LinkedIn didn’t reflect her upskilling.

We repositioned her Resume to swap out the career gap with her continued education. She also optimized her Resume/LinkedIn for the right keywords, spoke of her experience in energy and tech advisory, used regulatory standards and terms to highlight subject matter expertise, and quantified the impact of her consulting work on clients’ businesses.

3. Interview prep to address her career gap

The biggest concern that hiring managers have when hiring someone with a career break is whether they’d have to babysit you on the job or allocate for a longer onboarding for lack of current skills.

Through coaching, R understood that if she wanted to land her next offer, she needed to prove she would be up and running from day one.

Using the resources inside the program, R prepped her interview answers so she could not only demonstrate her technical expertise but also quickly put the hiring manager at ease regarding any concerns they had about the ramp-up once she was on the job.

Result: Dream offer with HP in exactly 60 days of working together.
