Your job search doesn’t have to be as unpredictable as the Houston weather.
If you are struggling to land interviews despite having the right qualifications, skills, and experience, you are likely making these 3 mistakes in your Resume:
1️⃣ USING A GENERIC PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY
Mistake: You have a long professional summary full of generic statements, wasting critical real estate on the Resume.
What to do: Use a simple 4-step framework to clearly highlight your industry experience, functional skill-set, competency with technical tools, and your scope leading large teams and $MM programs.
2️⃣ USING TITLES THAT YOUR COMPANY GAVE YOU
Mistake: You’re using company-specific job titles that recruiters or hiring managers outside your organization or industry don’t understand. For example, “Program Specialist II” or “Technical Analyst” doesn’t clearly convey your impact or seniority.
What to do: Translate your job titles to ones that align with industry standards. For example, instead of “Project Manager”, say “Senior Program Manager - Enterprise Systems” to align with your role and seniority.
3️⃣ NOT CLAIMING ENOUGH CREDIT FOR RESULTS
Mistake: Your bullet points focus on your responsibilities using words like "helped," "supported," or "assisted" instead of showcasing measurable accomplishments.
What to do: Quantify your achievements and take credit for the overall BIG organizational result!
Examples include:
- “Reduced onboarding time by 30% by implementing automated workflows.”
- “Led a cross-functional team of 15 to deliver a $5M product on time and under budget.”
