It’s a lesson ingrained into us, especially women of color.
Stay humble.
Never make waves.
Let hard work speak for itself.
But when I entered the corporate world, I realized this advice was doing me more harm than good.
Working hard isn’t enough.
You can do everything right and still get passed over for promotions.
You can say everything right and still get rejected in interviews.
The hard truth?
Success requires more than hard work.
If you want to succeed in today’s corporate world or land your next role, here are 10 things you need to do:
1. Speak up. Silence won’t get you noticed.
2. Self-promote. If you don’t own your wins, no one will.
3. Network. People hire people, not resumes.
4. Ask for more. More money is better than less.
5. Take risks. Playing safe keeps you small.
6. Stay visible. 99% of the game is showing up.
7. Build your brand. Let your strengths be known.
8. Invest in yourself. You really are your biggest asset.
9. Quit waiting. There is no better time than now.
10. Own your story. You’ve earned your seat at the table.
Working hard got you here.
It’s not going to take you to the next level.
As you put your big bold vision together for 2025, think about what investments you need to make in yourself?
How do you want to step up, speak up, and show up?
How do you want to be the powerhouse you are meant to be?
